I wonder if what I'm seeing is based on surface temperature versus air temperature. I have observed what I believed to be significant differences in silencer performance based on altitude (I have some vertical to play with here). PROVEN PERFORMANCE- Performance of 300 Blackout Subsonic meets or exceeds FBI Protocol terminal ballistic test requirements. THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT THAT VELOCITY IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN A BULLETS ENERGY AND WOUNDING EFFECT, AND THAT SUPERSONIC BULLETS ARE THOSE. Unfortunately the 1:9 twist rate will stabilize the lighter bullets which have velocities much higher than the 1100 rounds, so you might still hear a sonic crack with a supressor. The ONLY factor that is of importance in air is that the speed of sound is proportional to the square root of the absolute temperature - temperature above absolute zero (-456F). The Sub-X features a lead core and a cannelure for a positive case crimp for use in semi-automatics. Suppressors work great with subsonic rounds of 1100 fps or less. With bullet weights in the 190-220 grain range, and a muzzle velocity below 1,100 FPS, 300 Blackout is one of the best. Subsonic 300 Blackout has some of the best terminal ballistics of any subsonic round. It is similar by decreasing barometric pressure in an altitude chamber. When shooting your 300 blackout suppressed youll likely want to use subsonic ammo to make the gun quieter. In the arena of increasing pressure (pressure chamber) from 1 atm to 25 atm, there is a 2 fps difference. So, anything traveling less than that is subsonic. 22 Mag round commercially available in the U.S. The Super X Rimfire Subsonic is, to my knowledge, the first and only subsonic. ![]() Pressure variations (whether decreasing or increasing) has less than 2-3 fps difference in the velocity of sound in air. How many feet per second is subsonic Subsonic is anything traveling slower than the speed of sound, which is generally accepted to be 1,100 feet per second. That’s right Winchester is releasing a subsonic offering in. Long grooves in its gilding metal jacket combine with its flat profile and the patented Flex Tip® insert within the bullet’s hollowpoint cavity to help it expand. ![]() That sound is not produced from the breaking barrier. Sub-X® (Subsonic eXpanding) bullets deliver big results without a big bang Designed to provide deep penetration below the speed of sound, Sub-X® features a lead core. When the regular bullet breaks that range, a cracking sound will produce. The speed of sound at sea level is 1127 feet per second. The reason folks think altitude is part of the equation is because the temperature drops with increasing altitude. Approximately 1100 fps is the range at which the subsonic cartridge propels its projectile.
